PUFFS, OR: SEVEN INCREASINGLY EVENTFUL YEARS AT A CERTAIN SCHOOL OF MAGIC AND MAGIC

Typically in the fall, Students' Stage puts on a student-directed theatre revue. Everyone auditions for a panel of student directors with a song, monologue, or scene they would like to perform. The directors select their acts and put together a showcase featuring all the performers' pieces. It allows performers to work closely with a director, and directors an opportunity to get to practice working with actors. This fall, however, we wanted to do something different. With growing demand from the student body for more performance opportunities, we decided that we wanted to put on a full-length show. And so it was decided that this fall, we would produce Puffs!

Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic by Matt Cox is a humorous retelling of familiar magical events that may or may not be from a different, very popular wizarding franchise. This play centers around one boy wizard, but probably not the one you may be thinking of.

Wayne Hopkins is an ordinary kid from New Mexico who, upon learning that he is a wizard, is sent to an ambiguously named wizard school, ‘A Certain School of Magic and Magic.' There, he is grouped with an eclectic bunch of kind but often overlooked students, The Puffs. With his new friends Oliver and Megan, Wayne stumbles through seven increasingly eventful school years at magic school, all while trying to endure the chaos caused by the adventures of a far more celebrated wizarding trio.

The Puffs do not strive to save the world (as it is often they who need saving), but instead work together to survive the insane challenges that come with being a wizard, and with growing up. This play highlights the friendships, struggles, and small victories of this ragtag bunch as they find their place in a world where they are rarely seen as the heroes. Fast-paced, heartfelt, and hilarious, Puffs celebrates the underdogs—the ones usually left in the background.
